THE STORY Inga Feilberg Aistrup (1910–1990)
Inga Feilberg Aistrup (1910–1990) was a groundbreaking figure in Danish photography and a woman well ahead of her time. In 1938, she made history by becoming Denmark’s first female press photographer when she was hired by the weekly magazine Billed-Bladet. Through her lens, she captured striking images of Danish society — from glamorous film stars and elegant fashion to royal events and the everyday life of ordinary citizens. After the war, Aistrup gradually turned away from the fast-paced world of press photography. Instead, she devoted herself to portraying the Danish landscape, its cities, and its architecture with a quieter, more contemplative eye. Her images were widely published in photography books, including well-known titles such as Denmark and Zealand, Lolland, Falster and Møn.
Today, her photographic legacy lives on in several major Danish archives. Her work can be explored at the Copenhagen City Archives, the Royal Danish Library.More than just a photographer, Inga Aistrup was a trailblazer — a woman who helped open doors for future generations of female photographers and who used her craft to shape how Denmark saw itself, and how it was seen by the world. Her images remain not only artistically compelling but historically invaluable, offering glimpses into a nation’s soul through the eyes of a woman who quietly made history with every frame
